JEWELLERY CARE 101

Funky or traditional, jewellery mirrors your unique style. It can be that one favourite piece that holds sentimental value, a vintage heirloom, a long-term investment, or simply a one off follow-the-fad buy.

Whatever it is that you fancy, every jewellery piece you own needs gentle pampering to stay in pristine condition.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR JEWELLERY

The ultimate question: why does fine jewellery tarnish? Why do heirlooms start to discolour and become dull? It needn’t be this way. We can help you, step by step, to keep your jewellery in an immaculate state.

  • Jewellery cleaning
  • 925 sterling silver jewellery
  • 18K gold-plated jewellery
  • Jewellery storage

The key to keeping jewellery in mint condition is also the one most often ignored— consistent maintenance. No, you don’t have to rush to your jeweller every time there’s dirt or a film of oil on your jewellery. It is quite safe to do this job yourself.

JEWELLERY CLEANING

SJJ care hint: Make jewellery cleaning a habit. Don’t wait for dirt or oil residue to build up.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR JEWELLERY

The simplest daily routine? Gently wipe your jewellery with a dedicated jewellery-polishing cloth.

In the long run, to remove oil streaks, fingerprints and dust on to the surface and within crevices of the metal, you can soak, rinse, and dry your jewellery pieces (depending on its material).

WHAT TO USE TO CLEAN YOUR JEWELLERY

Wipe jewellery with a cloth that is specifically designed to clean smudges: a soft, lint-free material will leave no scratches.

To wash your jewellery, immerse it for 5-10 minutes in a pH neutral detergent solution. Depending on the material, you can use a soft toothbrush or non-abrasive washcloth and lightly rub the areas where any dirt may be lodged. Rinse immediately in clean water, and gently pat dry with a soft, absorbent cloth.

Viola! Sparkle and shine in your as-good-as-new jewellery!

PERILOUS PRODUCTS TO AVOID

As we continue to reach out for hand sanitisers, remember to take off rings and bracelets before using them; alcohol can darken sterling silver. Use perfumes and skin productsbefore you wear jewellery to minimise contact with jewellery.

Sprays, chemicals and household cleaning products seriously diminish jewellery life.

925 STERLING SILVER JEWELLERY

Renowned for 100 percent nickel-free rhodium-plated 925 sterling silver jewellery, Sif Jakobs Jewellery’s collections are of premium quality. Yet, it is necessary to take good care of plated silver jewellery to retain its lustre.

PREVENT SILVER TARNISHING

The good news is, the more you wear silver, the longer its shine will stay. Having said that, you do need to keep it away from moisture; never wear it in a sauna, jacuzzi, pool or at the beach, or leave in the bathroom.

Another pro tip: Take silver jewellery off while cleaning or cooking in the kitchen, at the gym, or while pottering around in the garden soil.

As with all things delicate and beautiful, heat, humidity and strong sunlight are its nemeses!

18K GOLD-PLATED JEWELLERY

All 18 karat avant-garde yellow and rose gold-plated sterling silver pieces from Sif Jakobs allow you to pick the trendiest of new styles with abandon, without making a huge dent in your pocket.

PROTECT YOUR GOLD-PLATED JEWELLERY

Now that we have dived into gold-plated gleam and glitter, let’s guide you to keep your precious gold-plated rings and bracelets safe from damage or scratches, shining as good as new.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before handling gold-plated jewellery if you’ve used any skincare or makeup products
  • Wear gloves when gardening or when handling soil or dirt, and always take off jewellery when lifting weights or exercising.
  • As with silver, exposure to chlorine, chemicals and sand is also a big no-no.

If you ticked all these boxes, take pride in how well you know your jewellery-care basics. And when you need an extra tip or two, check out our product care guidelines here.

JEWELLERY STORAGE

By now, you may have started to consider yourself an expert on jewellery care, but hey, hold on… the proverbial last but not the least is yet to come: storing your cherished pieces. Here’s a quick rundown of the do’s and don’ts of jewellery storage.

THE DO'S...

  • Place each piece in jewellery tissue before securing it in anti-tarnish pouches.
  • Opt for padded or velvet-lined jewellery boxes. Go the extra mile and select a compartmentalised one to tuck in each piece separately.
  • Use posts for hanging bracelets and necklaces to prevent them from entangling. Fasten the neck and bracelet chains securely so that they don’t jumble into knots.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.

Travel tip: Keep a jewellery travel boxor pouch in your handbag to store jewellery. Or wrap it in a cloth and slide into ziplock bags.

...THE ABSOLUTE DONT'S.

  • Dump jewellery in a drawer or toss it to collect in a pile on the dressing table – you don’t want to end up with scratched metal surfaces and gemstones.
  • Store jewellery in a drawer where you keep your personal care products.
  • Store sterling silver in wooden boxes; the chemicals in wood expedite tarnishing and discolouration.
